Salem, MA

 

A forgotten piece in the development of the historic Point neighborhood of Salem, MA, 15 Ward Street has remained an untended, paved lot for the past several decades. Called “The Lot” by neighborhood youth, it has provided an important space for makeshift ball-play. Building off this energy and initiative of the local youth, Crowley Cottrell designed a new activity-focused pocket park for this space.

 

The plan features an open, flexible space which allows for a new range of uses by the whole community, including basketball, children’s play and community gathering. Lively colors and patterns, and plantings with year-round interest, will energize and activate the space for neighborhood families.
