Salem, MA

The grassroots Friends of McGlew Park spearheaded the park’s redesign. Located in a former quarry, surrounded completely by residential lots with a narrow driveway as its only entry, this park is forgotten by most Salem residents. The design overhauls the entry visually and functionally. An accessible loop path connects areas of passive and active recreation and promotes walking and jogging. Through a selective clearing and boardwalk overlooks, the design activates the unique rock ledge around the edges of the park. New play equipment, landforms and improved access to the rock ledge will promote adventurous play and exploration.
