The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy

In need of expanded office space for its staff, the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy enlisted Dimella Shaffer Architects to complete an addition and historic preservation project for its headquarters in Cambridge. The Brattle Street building, located next door to the National Park Service’s Henry Wadsworth Longfellow House, is a colonial revival house built for Longfellow’sdaughter Edith Longfellow and her husband Richard Henry Dana in 1887.

Crowley Cottrell’s work included a new layout for the parking lot, an accessible bluestone paver walkway and seating area at the updated rear entrace, an accessible outdoor small meeting and reflection area, new plantings, site lighting, and resurfacing the gravel driveway with permeable pavers. Although a modern material, the permeable concrete pavers are reminiscent of cobblestones and model The Lincoln Institute’s commitment to green infrastructure, while creating an accessible pedestrian route to the building.
