Ken Kelly Park is a .15-acre site in a densely developed Environmental Justice neighborhood. At Crowley Cottrell, we led a robust community engagement process to identify residents’ priorities. The resulting design creates a series of universally accessible outdoor rooms that appeal to users of all ages and abilities. Each room has a patterned “carpet” of permeable pavers and include: the Front Porch with interactive water feature; the Dining Room with picnic and game tables, and the Living Room with lounge furniture. The plantings were selected from the Somerville Pollinator Action Plan to support local wildlife. New street trees and wider sidewalks enhance the pedestrian experience and provide much needed shade within this urban setting.
