Sarah Roberts School
Boston Public Schools, PFD
As part of Boston Public Schools’ Green New Deal initiative, the Sarah Roberts Elementary School landscape was designed to embody the values of safety, health, climate resilience, and inclusivity. The project team at Crowley Cottrell transformed an existing play field and asphalt yard to a vibrant play space for student and neighborhood use. A natural lawn play field, basketball court, nature play, outdoor classroom, age 5-12 play area, age 2-5 play area, and raised garden beds all work together to foster the school’s values. Revised site grading, crosswalks, and bollards were coordinated with the building’s new elevator access points and redesigned drop-off areas. The rear parking lot was updated with protected walker lanes, EV car charging points, and its rain garden was extended and enhanced with new native planting. The site abuts a wetland, so our plan was reviewed and passed by the Boston Conservation Commission.
