Located in the heart of Lawrence, our design for Leahy Elementary School navigates tight spatial limits, budget constraints, and complex regulatory requirements to deliver a landscape that supports education and long-term sustainability. Two rooftop playgrounds maximize outdoor space on the compact site, while the trees are carefully aligned with the structural grid to minimize additional building costs. At street level, we introduced structural soil beneath all paved areas to reduce future root heave, accommodating the introduction of street trees. Integrated into the landscape are spaces that extend learning beyond the classroom: a garden for science classes and outdoor learning, an inclusive OT/PT play area with engaging surfacing, and storage spaces for easy maintenance and programming. All elements reflect a focus on low-maintenance, high-impact interventions that align with the operational capacities of the public school system.
