Mattahunt Woods Urban Wild
Boston Parks, Cons Comm
Mattahunt Woods is a 4.5-acre parcel nestled between Cummings Highway, Mattahunt Elementary School, and a residential neighborhood in Mattapan, Boston. Comprising of two distinct wetlands, these woods had limited access due to invasive species, thick briar understory, and puddingstone boulder fields. With accessibility and native habitat restoration as guiding pillars, our team at Crowley Cottrell designed a broad trail network extending from four formalized entrances. Gravel paths connect with boardwalks to guide circulation across wetlands and negotiate grade changes, unlocking new areas for exploration. The space additionally connects to trails at the adjacent elementary school, providing students with the opportunity for outdoor learning.
