Our project team at Crowley Cottrell reimagined the Great Lawn at Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover, MA to better meet the needs of its residents. Exposed aggregate concrete terraces are separated from the building to create space for a colorful perennial garden that can be enjoyed both indoors and out. The terraces were realigned and expanded to create an easier path of travel between outdoor living spaces. An underutilized corner was transformed into a garden oasis with a pergola, water feature and ground cover drifts under a grove of river birch. Unusable space under an existing grove of birch trees was converted into an accessible recreation area. A deck was constructed around the existing trees with a built-in bocce court, shuffleboard court, and outdoor kitchen and game tables. Directly adjacent to the deck is a horseshoe pit and reinforced grass for additional lawn games and event spill out.
