Colin's Courtyard

Boston Parks

This redesign of the lawn at the Boston Housing Authority’s Monsignor Powers Apartments was created in honor of Colin McGrath, a two-year-old boy who was struck and killed on the adjacent sidewalk. The project was made possible through the support of Colin’s Joy Project, founded by Colin’s family with the outpouring of love and support from the community. What was once an open lawn has been reimagined as a welcoming, multigenerational courtyard. Seating near the building entrance supports senior residents, while playful seating, a water feature, a free library, and a new gate invite neighborhood families to gather. Painted rocks first placed in remembrance have been incorporated into the design, with blank stones available for visitors to return with messages of hope, joy, and love.
