Aquinnah Overlook
Town of Aquinnah
Aquinnah Circle, a popular picnicking and tourist destination offering breathtaking views of the Gay Head Cliffs, was developed through a collaboration between the town, the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head, and our team at Crowley Cottrell. The preexisting Cliff Overlook and historic marker were once inaccessible, surrounded by asphalt that failed to withstand the shifting dunes. Therefore, we designed a series of ramps, landings, and a raised gathering deck to improve site resilience and visitor experience and access. Flattening a highly used sloped lawn with a retaining wall, stabilizing it with native plantings, and creating a brick terrace with accessible paths from the shops makes the area more accessible to everyone. To anchor and shade this new gathering space, we worked with local artist on a sculptural structure that features hand-hewn, locally sourced, Black Locust tree trunks.
