Halibut Point State Park

DCR

Halibut Point State Park welcomes thousands of visitors each year to its dramatic vistas of a freshwater-filled quarry and the Atlantic Ocean. Once subjected to intensive quarrying, the site now supports protected natural resources, with quarry scars giving rise to maritime shrubland, wetlands, and several vernal pools. This project celebrated and protected both the historic and contemporary functions of the park while choreographing visitors through a clearer, more legible experience. The work centered on four primary areas of improvement: the entry and parking lot, meadow, main trail, and Visitor Center. To signal arrival, a series of reclaimed granite walls were introduced and paired with a lively meadow in place of a once-manicured lawn. The redesigned parking lot expands capacity, manages stormwater, and streamlines circulation. The main trail, resurfaced with stone dust, a more accessible, sustainable and relevant material, leads visitors to the renovated Visitor Center and an improved event lawn with framed views of the quarry.
