This project provides much needed low-income housing on Martha’s Vineyard. The continual collaboration with builders, architects, and developers—from the first brainstorming session to the completion of construction—was critical to the design of this environmentally sensitive development. The goals for the site were to retain as many large trees as possible, enhance and retain native vegetation, minimize paving, and provide both shared and private outdoor gathering areas. The site’s most prominent design feature—the wooden deck—links the housing units to one another. This approach minimizes disruption to the existing landscape while ensuring accessible entries.
