Community Housing (CoHo)
Tufts University
Crowley Cottrell collaborated on a comprehensive planning study to transform a collection of university-owned single- and multi-family houses into a cohesive student village. Aimed at increasing on-campus housing capacity while preserving apartment-style independence, the landscape design emphasizes shared backyard spaces and pedestrian connections to the main campus. A central challenge was establishing a clear sense of campus place that blends seamlessly with the surrounding neighborhood. Located on a steep hillside, the site required careful planning to identify accessible routes, locate accessible units and community amenities, and minimize the need for ramps and railings. The resulting landscape prioritizes universal accessibility while fostering a strong sense of community.
