McGlew Park

City of Salem

Nestled in a former quarry and surrounded by residential lots, this park is largely forgotten by Salem residents, with only a narrow driveway providing access. To revitalize it, a grassroots organization, Friends of McGlew Park, has led a redesign effort. Our team collaborated with the organization to create a design that starts by transforming both the function and aesthetic of the entry. An accessible loop path then connects areas of passive and active recreation while promoting walking and jogging. Through a selective clearing with boardwalk overlooks, the design activates the unique rock ledge around the boundaries of the park. New play equipment, landforms, and improved access to the rock ledge promote adventurous play and exploration.
