Within Maine’s distinctive coastal geologic zone, this restored 7.3-acre property has evolved from invasive overgrowth into a dramatic landscape, where sweeping plant communities emphasize the natural form of the land. The design draws inspiration from the linear patterns of the local terrain, where the land’s topography naturally expresses itself in stripes of habitat—alternating high, dry ridges and low, wet hollows. These subtle micro-ecologies now serve as the organizing logic of the planting design. Large swaths of native vegetation were strategically deployed to emphasize the property’s underlying landforms and restore a sense of place. The supplementation of new paths and seating areas enhance the enjoyment and useability of the improved landscape.
