Brandeis House

Private Residence

Built in 1914 for performing arts educator Leland Powers, the historic Brandeis House later became home to two presidents of Brandeis University. Set high on a steep hillside, the residence had long suffered from limited access and underused outdoor spaces. The landscape renovation re-imagined circulation around the entire house, making the approach more intuitive and the site easier to navigate. New bluestone steps negotiate the dramatic grade, while exposed aggregate concrete terraces provide durable, elegant surfaces for gathering and everyday use. Plantings were selected to complement the home’s historic character and soften the bold geometry of the hardscape. The result is a cohesive, accessible landscape that honors the home’s legacy while enhancing daily living.
