This residential development in Northampton combines affordable and market-rate housing with first-floor retail, revitalizing a once-neglected site dominated by asphalt parking into a welcoming amenity for the entire community. The creation of a courtyard and lawn, open space for resident activities and events, and a continuation of the vibrant street life along Pleasant Street helps foster an accessible and inviting space that is aesthetically integrated with its surrounding context. Side entrances assist in the separation of residential and retail circulation. This landscape not only accommodates loading needs, but also creates a peaceful garden, space for bike storage, and mid-block circulation. Inspired by the adjacent abandoned rail corridor wall, reclaimed New England granite is used throughout the site, grounding the new building in the site’s history.
