A forgotten piece in the development of the historic Point neighborhood of Salem, 15 Ward Street has remained an untended, paved lot for several decades. Called “The Lot” by neighborhood youth, it has provided an important space for makeshift ball-play. Building off this energy and initiative of the local youth, our team at Crowley Cottrell designed an activity-focused pocket park for the space. Our plan features an open, flexible space that accommodates a new range of activity for the whole community, including basketball, children’s play and community gathering. Lively colors and patterns, and plantings with year-round interest, provide the energy needed to activate the space for neighborhood families.
