Defying suburban convention, Crowley Cottrell reimagined this front yard as a walled cutting garden, replacing a flat lawn with abundant, ever-changing blooms. Guided and inspired by the homeowner’s background in botany and cut-flower design, the garden thrives as both workspace and display. To respect the historic neighborhood, a continuous stone wall addresses the streetscape, containing the garden’s exuberance while meeting historic commission approval. On the sunnier east side, brick pathways provide structure—a backdrop for the homeowner’s seasonal plantings. In contrast, the shadier areas unfold more naturally, with stone steppers winding through ferns and spring ephemerals. Balanced between order and wildness, the garden offers a rich, immersive place to linger.
