CONCORD ACADEMY
Salem, MA
Located in Salem’s densely developed Point neighborhood, this building's courtyard offers a unique opportunity to provide green-space to its residents. Alongside a full building renovation, Crowley Cottrell transformed this once underutilized courtyard into a safe, community oriented space. The design removes failing combined stormwater/ sewer infrastructure, provides easy and accessible circulation, offers areas for respite and gathering, and provides life through the addition of native trees and shrubs.
The courtyard boasts the only sculptural pieces of art within the NSCDC’s Punto Urban Art Museum. The artist Ruben Ubiera built the three columns with the help of other local artists and kids. The portraits on the columns feature residents who have lived within the building.
